Ring in the New Year with MLH Paper & Party Supplies

By Pete Zamplas –

MLH Paper & Party Supplies is ringing in the new year with an assortment of party items for revelers, as well as to celebrate various occasions throughout the year.

The MLH stands for Mary Lois Hollingsworth, who started the business and ran it for its first 27 years. Nowadays, MLH Paper & Party Supplies is run by her daughter, Sheila Hollingsworth Fortner. Sheila has said it was important to keep the business in the family, and is owner and and manager.

Sheila also works for Pardee Hospital’s patient financial services. She has served as president of the Board of Directors for the Mainstay shelter for abused women, and is active in various civic groups. She is married with three children.

Mrs. Fortner three years ago was among a handful honored as Woman of the Day, by the Henderson County chapter of the Business and Professional Women and for National Business Women’s Week in October. They were chosen for contributions to their businesses, families and communities, both personally and professionally.

MLH Paper & Party Supplies is at 309 White St. in Hendersonville, near the Fresh Market.

Inside, there are more than a dozen types of hats for New Year’s Eve, and also many horns to use to sound on arrival of 2013.

Mylar decorative balloons, largely for young children’s birthdays and other parties, fill a long wall. Sturdy Mylar film, like tin foil, does not tear easily. Mylar was developed in the mid-Fifties by DuPont. In 1960, NASA launched the 100-foot-wide Echo satellite, made of thick Mylar film.

Mylar caught on with balloons about 35 years ago. Other uses include as a base material for video and audio magnetic tapes, electric insulation, map overlays, and performance sails. When aluminized, Mylar can reflect up to 99 percent of light and heat. Indeed, Mylar balloons are shiny on the front side.

Big sellers at MLH include cookware for baking and decorating cakes, in a large selection in a back room. As staff notes, this selection is unusually large compared to other area stores, and draws customers especially for it.

The store also has a variety of table clothes, plates and napkins, among many other items.
